ACTIVITIES
- Study of active galactic nuclei (AGN) using Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) Telescopes
- Study of VHE (very high energy, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray propagation through space
- Operations and maintenance of the MAGIC Telescopes
- Development of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and Large-Sized Telescope (LST) prototype
AGNs are bright compact regions in the centres of galaxies that emit radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. They are believed to be powered by accretion of matter by supermassive black holes (SMBH), that exist in centre of every massive galaxy. Some AGN form collimated jets through which accreted matter is ejected at ultrarelativistic speeds. AGN may, thus, also be considered giant natural particle accelerators.
RESEARCH EQUIPMENT
Our main research equipment is located in the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) in the Canary island of La Palma.
MAGIC Florian Goebel Telescopes
MAGIC telescopes is a system of two imaging Cherenkov telescopes situated in ORM. The telescopes record Cherenkov radiation produced in the atmosphere by gamma-rays and cosmic rays. They are optimised for observations of gamma-rays of energies above 50 GeV. Although they can operate as standalone telescopes, the usual operation is in a stereoscopic mode.
CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array)
CTA is a planed system of Cherenkov thelescopes. Future array will have two sites, one in each hemisphere. North site will be located in ORM, and contain 19 telescopes of two different sizes, while South site will consist of 99 telescopes of three different sizes located in Chile near Paranal Observatory. First telescope of CTA-North was recently built.

LST (Large-sized Telescope)
Prototype of LST is currently was recently inaugurated in ORM. It is the largest of three types of Cherenkov telescopes planed for the CTA.
