Istraživanja
Istraživanja unutar laboratorija usmjerena su na primjenu nuklearnih analitičkih tehnika u elementnoj analizi uzoraka. Nuklearne analitičke tehnike se baziraju na spektroskopiji karakterističnih x-zraka pobuđenih u uzorku, pri čemu se pobuda postiže ili izvorom x-zraka (npr. rendgenska cijev ili sinhrotronsko zračenje) ili s ionima MeV-skih energija. Ove tehnike omogućavaju vrlo efikasne i brze kvantitativne elementne analize kako malih, tako i velikih uzoraka (od čestica aerosola do arheoloških objekata).
Popis tehnika:
- XRF – fluorescencija x-zraka (X-Ray Fluorescence) i micro-XRF,
- PIXE – česticama izazvana emisija x-zraka (Particle Induced X-ray Emission), i micro-PIXE,
- RBS – Rutherford-ovo raspršenje čestica projektila (Rutherford BackScattering),
- PESA – elestično raspršenje protona (Proton Elastic Scattering Analysis),
- PIGE – česticama izazvana emisija gama-zraka (Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission),
U Laboratoriju se radi fluorescencija x-zraka (XRF) dok se ostale tehnike, za koje su potrebni akceleratorski sustavi, izvode u Laboratoriju za interakcije ionskih snopova Instituta Ruđer Bošković s kojima imamo dugogodišnju uspješnu suradnju.
Svojstva nuklearnih analitičkih tehnika:
- Multielementnost: od vodika (PESA) do C,O, N (RBS), Na, Mg, Al, Si (PIGE) i svih ostalih elemenata upotrebom XRF i PIXE tehnika,
- Osjetljivost – tipično koncentracije do ppm nivoa a po potrebi i niže,
- Veliki dinamički raspon – od % sve do ppm u istoj analizi,
- Dovoljan vrlo mali uzorak
- Jednostavna priprema uzoraka
- Nedestruktivnost
- Pozicijska osjetljivost, što znači da se na istom uzorku mogu analizirati mali segmenti, ako se očekuje nehomogenost u materijalu – na taj način omogućava se površinsko pa čak i dubinsko elementno mapiranje uzoraka,
Primjena nuklearnih analitičkih tehnika:
Nuklearne analitičke tehnike se osim u fundamentalnim znanstvenim istraživanjima primjenjuju i u polju zaštite okoliša i zdravlja, industrijskih procesa, ne-destruktivnih testiranja, forenzici i arheološkim straživanjima, itd. Trenutni fokus istraživanja Laboratorija je analiza lebdećih čestica (aerosoli) u svrhu kojeg se provodi kontinuirano višegodišnje uzorkovanje.
