The Faculty of Physics has conducted intensive scientific, professional and teaching activities related to environmental research since the very beginnings of the Department of Physics at the University of Rijeka. Scientific-teaching staff focusing on various environmental components have obtained and implemented scientific and professional projects, collaborated with industry, published scientific publications, undertaken notable popularisation activities and supervised a significant number of bachelor’s and master’s theses. As these activities expanded in scope and new environmental specialists joined the faculty, establishing a dedicated department became necessary. The Faculty of Physics Council established the Department of Environmental Sciences at its 9th session on 22 July 2024.
