“We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.”
Carl Sagan, Why We Need to Understand Science, The Skeptical Inquirer, 1990
The popularisation of physics is of great importance at the Faculty of Physics. We dedicate a significant amount of attention and time to designing and carrying out a wide variety of outreach and science communication activities. The Faculty also has the Committee for Visibility and Popularization.
Our students are very actively involved in science outreach, and the Faculty also offers a course titled Popularization of Science as part of its graduate studies.
Faculty members often visit schools with educational and outreach programs, and in turn, both teachers and students frequently visit the Faculty of Physics to attend our workshops and explore our laboratories. The Faculty of Physics regularly and actively participates in numerous events such as the Science Festival, Researchers’ Night, Pint of Science, Open Day, Tetragon Competition, University for the Third Age, UniRi for Cres Residents, and Baltazar popularisation event at the Trsat Castle.
Our outreach efforts have been recognized at the national level. Prof. Rajka Jurdana Šepić, PhD, received the National Award for Science in 2013 for her work in the popularization of natural sciences. She is also a long-time editor of the science outreach radio show Baltazar on HR Radio Rijeka.
